It is with regret we announce the passing of H.A. "Al"Dunlap.  He passed away peacefully July 26, 2014 at the Scottish Rite Park Care Center in Des Moines. Al was born on August 29, 1924 in Hardy, Arkansas to William and Eva Dunlap. After graduating from high school Al moved to Bartlesville, OK and worked for Phillips Petroleum where he met his future wife Joanne. Al and Joanne were married July 1, 1948. After several work-related moves they settled in Urbandale, Iowa where they made their home and raised their two children. In 2010 they moved to Scottish Rite Park. Al was a proud employee of Phillips Petroleum Co. for 50 years.  Al was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Capital Lodge #110 AF & AM, Des Moines Consistory, Des MoinesYork Rite Bodies, Za Ga Zig Shrine, High Twelve Club, Shrine Past Masters Club Al was very active in Scottish Rite and was a 50 year member receiving the 32nd Degree in 1963.  He chaired the mail crew for many years.  Al performed as Adolph the Saxon in the 21st degree as well as doing parts in the 20th, 30th, 31st and 32nd degrees.  Al was director of the ritual for the Council of Kadosh.  He served as Commander of the Council of Kadosh1985-1987 and was Master of Kadosh in 1988.  Al was invested a Knight Commander Court of Honour in 1981 and with the 33rd and last degree in 1989.  He was a Past Master of Capital Lodge #110 and received his District Lecturer Certificate in 1961. Al is survived by his daughter Diane (Al Hohrmann) Dunlap of Des Moines; son Bruce (Ann) Dunlap of Iowa City; and grandchildren Ian Dunlap and Ellen Dunlap. Al was preceded in death by his wife Joanne; his parents; his seven siblings; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Thursday, July 31 at 1:30 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale. Visitation will be at Iles Westover Chapel from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 with his Masonic service performed at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Private interment will take place at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines. Contributions may be made to the Scottish Rite Consistory Preservation Trust, 519 Park Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309. .

2014 Fall Reunion Master of Kadosh Steven F. Jacobsen, 32° KCCH has chosen Charles W. Iles, 32° KCCH  as the honoree for the 2014 Fall Reunion.  Brother Iles joined the Des Moines Consistory in 1964.  Chuck was an officer in the Lodge of Perfection line and served as Master of Kadosh of the Des Moines Consistory in 1987.  He was a member of Acanthus Lodge #632 and Panora Lodge #121 as well as Za Ga Zig Shrine. This is a very special reunion for our Valley as for the first time ever we will be conferring in full form all 29 of the Scottish Rite Degrees.  This has been a long term goal for our Valley and many hours of hard work have gone into the accomplishment of this task.  The reunion will be in a slightly different format to accommodate the performance of all the degrees. The schedule is outlined in detail below. We call our degree conferrals "Reunions" because the brethren come together to share the special lessons of the Scottish Rite degrees with a new class of candidates. As we meet to witness and perform these degrees, the teachings of the Scottish Rite are exemplified to our new brothers and reinforced in us anew. Following the degree work will be our annual Double Eagle Gala featuring Slipstream.  The Double Eagle Gala is our premier Scottish Rite event of the year and is open to SR Masons, wives, and guests. Scottish Rite Temple Des Moines  Merit Badge  Doug Clabaugh brought this badge to a recent Scottish Rite event. After asking around, we are still unsure about what it was given out for. If anyone has any information about this badge or knows someone who might please let us know.  -

2014 Double Eagle Gala The 2014 Double Eagle Gala will be held on Saturday November 1, 2014 at the Scottish Rite Consistory 6th Ave. and Park St., Des Moines,IA.   Music will be performed by the Central Iowa Band, Slipstream.

Food, Fun, Flags,  Fireworks & Scottish Rite was a great success, our attendance was well over 250!  We enjoyed tasty food, an entertaining band and watched spectacular fireworks from the Top of  the Tower put on by both the Capitol Building and the Iowa Cubs.  Thanks  to all that came, we can't wait  for next year.

WOW, what an event!  Tonight the Des Moines Scottish Rite hosted a patriotic event to kickoff 4th of July celebrations.  Gathering on the top floor of the Holiday Inn- Mercy Campus, we had beautiful views of downtown Des Moines, Shrine clowns making balloon animals and other creations, the 34th Army Band's Scrap Metal Group (which was outstanding!, and featured our own Bro. Brian Pappaducas, 33).  There were burgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, and drinks for all ages.  Lots of fun for the whole family!

Just before the fireworks started downtown (of which we had one of the best views of anywhere, Bro. John Clearman, 33, gave the lost lecture of the flag from the 30th degree.  Bro. Ron Lindhart led the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Chantors and the Des Moines Scottish Rite's Double-Eagle Chorus in a sing-a-long of patriotic tunes, and then it was time for fireworks.

What a perfect way for families to get together to celebrate the birth of our nation.  Well done to all that organized the event, and especially to Scrap Metal for their excellent performance!

One Day Class to Honor Bob Rice, 32° KCCH Master of Kadosh, Steve Jacobsen, has chosen to honor Bob Rice, 32° KCCH at our One Day Class to be held next Saturday June 28, 2014.  Bob was very active in both the Scottish Rite and Za Ga Zig Shrine for many years.  He was well known for recruiting new members in both organizations. This reunion will feature 7 of the Scottish Rite degrees and our first ever presentation of the 19th Degree, Grand Pontiff.  In addition, to the mandatory degrees (4, 14, 18, 30, 32) the 31st degree, Inspector Inquisitor, will be a part of the reunion schedule.  It features an Egyptian motif and causes the candidate to consider his mortality in a very dramatic way.  The entire reunion schedule for next weekend is below. Following the reunion we will have a social hour with  hors de oeuvres and toasts to honor our new class members.  There will also be a special toast commemorating the 700th Anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.  The Battle of Bannockburn has a special connection to the Scottish Rite.  This battle resulted in the creation of the Knight of St. Andrew, which is our 29th degree.

This patriotic event will be held at the Top of the Tower at the Holiday Inn (Mercy Campus) beginning at 6:30 pm. Call it our Scottish Rite indoor picnic. There will be brats, burgers, hot dogs, sno-cones and chips. The Iowa 34th Army Band brass band ensemble "Scrap Metal" will be providing tunes to liven up the party. They play a wide variety including 70's, 80's and 90's pop, funk and jazz. There will be games and Shrine Clowns for the kids, plus a patriotic tribute as part of the evening of activities. The Holiday Inn, Top of the Tower, will also provide a great view to watch fireworks at the State Capital and following the Iowa Cubs Game at Principal Park. It is air conditioned, there are no mosquitoes and you don't have to bring a lawn chair.

More About The Iowa 34th Army Band: Scrap Metal  Formed in 2012, Scrap Metal is the newest group to the 34th Army Band. They are a modern New Orleans style Brass Band that plays a large variety of music, from current pop tunes to 80s and 90s rock, blues, funk, Ska and riot jazz - there's really no limit to what they'll attempt.  While the members of Scrap Metal are part-time soldiers and musicians, their approach to music and level of professionalism is unmatched.  They pride themselves on their eclectic music selection, improvisation, and most importantly their fun-loving, high-energy performance. The result is a bending of genres, vocals and the best songs in the pop idiom. Top-notch showmanship and wide appeal inspire patriotism which is at the core of the 34th Army Band. It should be noted that they claim no pride whatsoever in their dance skills.
