Scottish Rite Event

This Wednesday, January 13^th is a very special and unique opportunity for the Masons of Iowa, sponsored by the Iowa Scottish Rite Masonic Foundation.  It is a dinner and speech by Dr. Richard Berman of the Grand Lodge of England.  He is the 2016 Prestonian lecturer of the Grand Lodge of England.  Dr. Berman is the author of several books on the development of Freemasonry.  As far as I can tell, this is the first ever visit to Iowa by a Prestonian lecturer.  This event should be a great supplement to the information that Ron Lindhart,33° has provided at our Royal Mile celebrations.  So in case you have forgotten…the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England was Anthony Sayer.

We will begin with fellowship and social time beginning at 6:00 pm.  We have Grand Master of Masons in Iowa, MWB Arthur G. Crandon, Dr. Berman and several brothers from other Iowa Scottish Rite Valleys joining us, so please help them feel welcome.  At approximately 6:20, we will have dinner.  Dinner will be Caesar salad, prime rib, “real” mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and double chocolate cake.  The cost is $10 per person.  If you haven’t made your reservations please do so by 12:00 pm Tuesday, January 12th. 

Dr. Berman’s presentation will follow dinner and will include a question and answer session.

Another major project begins.   In 2014 the fly roof was replaced now this year its the Auditorium roof that's getting replaced.  These are 2 out of 3 major roofing sections that have been done. Thanks to members like you who have donated to the  Des Moines Building Trust. The building is in better shape than is was 10 years ago.  We wouldn't be able to do this replacement without the contributions that have been made.  We appreciate all who have helped make this project happen.

York Rite/Scottish Rite Memorial & Ascension Service    The officers of the Des Moines Lodge of Perfection and the Des Moines York Rite bodies invite you to our joint York Rite/Scottish Rite Memorial & Ascension Service to be held May 13, 2015. We will have dinner in the Tapestry Lounge at 6:15 pm.  There is no charge for the dinner but a reservation made with the Scottish Rite office would be greatly appreciated (515-288-8927 or rsvp@dmscottishrite.org).    The service of remembrance for our departed brothers from the York Rite and the Scottish Rite will be at 7:30 pm.  This event is open to Masons, their families and guests.       Knights of St. Andrew   Des Moines Chapter, Knights of St. Andrew will receive and welcome new Knights into the Order on June 10, 2015.  This ceremony is open only to members of the Knights of St. Andrew, Knights Commander of the Courts of Honor, and Inspectors General Honorary.  Any Master of the Royal Secret (32°) can join by filling out an application for membership.  For more information contact Mike Taylor, Commander 515-720-7737 or the Scottish Rite office at 515-288-8927.

Lavendar Reunion Kickoff Recap

The Kitchen Krew has outdone themselves once again!  After a wonderful prime rib dinner, we enjoyed a presentation by Steve Jacobsen, Master of Kadosh, and Tom Cox, Junior Warden of the Chapter Rose Croix on Masonry and the Scottish Rite in particular.  Ron Lindhart, Past master of Kadosh gave a thorough tour of the building as well.

A great evening of food and fellowship!

Meals from the Heartland

 In what has become an annual event, the members of the Des Moines Consistory, their families and friends will join together to pack 32,000 meals for the 2013 Meals from the Heartland Project. It will be held on Sunday, December 1^stat the Scottish Rite Consistory. As in the past there will be two shifts to allow for various holiday schedules.  

These meals will be distributed throughout Iowa as well as around the world to those most in need. Last year, over 100 volunteers were on hand for the project. The project will begin with the unloading the bulk food and setting up of the production line on Sunday morning at 10:00 am. Lunch will be provided by our Scottish Rite "Kitchen Krew" and the 2nd shift will begin at 1:00 pm, our goal is to be completed by 4:00 pm.

There will be an overview of how the food would be utilized and instruction on how to package 32,000 meals in just an afternoon. While the packaging is a big part of the job, there are bins to refill, boxes to make, a truck to be loaded, and clean up to be done.

We can use volunteers of all ages. You do not have to be a part of Scottish Rite to participate, your friends and family are more than welcome to attend. Please let the SR Office know of your attendance plans so we can plan ahead. 515-288-8927 or rsvp@dmscottishrite.org.

Double Eagle Gala Update Master of Kadosh, Daniel R. Hobson, has selected "Freestyle" as the band for the Double Eagle Gala. The have played previously at the Gala and did a great job. The Feast of Tishri

 The Feast of Tishri is celebrated in many Valley’s of the Scottish Rite
and commemorates the dedication of King Solomon’s Temple. It
also commemorates the period after the exodus from Egypt during
which the Jews wandered in the wilderness and lived in huts. It relates to
the general celebration of Thanksgiving. The Feast of Tishri is an essential
part of the Fourteenth Degree and alludes to the symbolic details of the
Temple’s position, design, construction, furnishing, and decoration
as the metaphorical temple of Freemasonry built in the
heart of every brother.
We learn to recommit ourselves to building Freemasonry “in
the hearts of men and among nations.” The consecration of the Temple
teaches the equality and unity of all members of the Rite.

In the Feast of Tishri, all Perfect Elus and those of higher Degrees can join at the banquet table and share the bond of fraternal unity. The law, legendry,
peace, quality, unity, and fellowship of the Feast of Tishri combine to make this the Masonic feast of feasts.*

A very large group of over one hundred Scottish Rite Masons gathered to celebrate the Feast of Tishri in the Grand Ballroom of the Des Moines Consistory.

There was a time for socialization and a chance to visit with each other before the Feast and the Brethren took full advantageof the time to greet and talk.

The table was arranged in a Table Lodge format and as is usual at a Table Lodge there was singing and Masonic Toasts.

Following a Salad Course there were three Toasts

Each toast was led by a different officer of the Rite.
 The first toast was To Our Country.

The Double Eagle Chorus performed the anthem, God Bless America.


2nd Toast: To our Symbolic Lodges and all Master Masons.

3rd Toast: To Worshipful Masters and the Grand Master.



At this point we at the most delicious perfectly prepared steak dinner ever served at the Scottish Rite.  Dick Hudnel and the Kitchen Krew outdid themselves.


Following dinner the remainder of the Toasts were given.

4th Toast: To the Master of Kadosh and Personal Representative

5th Toast: To the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite

6th Toast to the memory of our Departed Brethren

and finally the 7th Toast: To all poor distressed Master Masons wherever dispersed

We closed by singing

"God Speed Freemasonry"

Dear Brothers of the plumb and square

  Come join in cheerful song;

Let every heart and voice prepare

The glad notes to prolong.

We're brothers of the Mystic Tie

We're brothers True and Free

Quarterly Meeting and Election

 The Des Moines Consistory was opened tonight for the Quarterly Meeting and Election.  New chairs have added to the comfort for the Brethren attending the meetings. 

The Brothers had a Taco Dinner before the meeting and had a chance to visit with one another.

 Following the Registrar's report which showed that the Valley has 1288 members with 25 new 32 degree Masons this year.  If all dues are paid we will have a year with a net gain which is a very good thing for the Valley

 Registrar Harshbarger gave a report about the Biennial Session which you can see at this link. 

 Shane also reported that the Supreme Council is now in amity with the Ancient, Accepted Scottish Rite 33 degree Southern Jurisdiction Prince Hall Masons.

The 2012 Fall Reunion Kick-off is this Thursday.  It is a great opportunity to share Freemasonry with a potential new member or to invite a Master Mason to learn more about Scottish Rite.  It will be held in the Grand Banquet room of the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on Thursday, September 27^th. 

We will begin the evening with social hour at 6:15 pm.  Our famous “Kitchen Krew” Grill Masters will be serving steaks for dinner and then a short program on Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite will follow dinner.

The cost is $10 for Scottish Rite members but prospective members for the Symbolic Lodge or Scottish Rite are free with a reservation.  Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 515-288-8927 or rsvp@dmscottishrite.org.

Blue Lodge Breakfast

On Saturday, January 28, 2012, the Des Moines Scottish Rite hosted the annual Blue Lodge Breakfast. The Council of Kadosh served a complimentary breakfast of eggs, hash browns, sausage, and cinnamon rolls to over one hundred Freemasons who attended.

After breakfast, Master of Kadosh John W. Clearman introduced a short video program honoring the American Flag. The fifteen-minute video features historical information, patriotic themes, and a hilarious comedy routine by Robin Williams. The video is available free from the Freemason Network, a social networking site sponsored by the Supreme Council, 33°, A.&A.S.R. of Freemasonry, S.J. The Des Moines Scottish Rite hosts the annual breakfast as a service for Blue Lodges in the area. A directory of area Lodges and officers was distributed and upcoming events were announced. Cleon Babcok, PM of Pioneer Lodge #22 was the lucky winner of a drawing for a free Scottish Rite Polo Shirt. After the program, many stayed for the cribbage tournament. (M.A.M)
