Our first weekend will begin on this Friday, March 14th. We will confer the 4th to 8th degrees. Dinner ($10) will be served at 5:00 pm in the WT and Edna Dahl Grand Banquet Room. The reunion opening will be at 6:00 pm. If you haven't been to a reunion in the past few years, please consider making a special trip to attend. The opening has been completely rewritten. It is also important that our new Scottish Rite Masons see familiar faces on their special night.
March 15 will begin promptly at 8:00 am with the 9th Degree, Elu of the Nine. You might recall our old friends from the 3rd degree reappear. This is a great example of how the Scottish Rite expands on the drama of the Symbolic Lodge. Following the work, we will have a social hour for all in attendance.
The 2nd weekend of the reunion will take place March 28/29 with the Council of Kadosh and Consistory degrees. The 2nd Friday is always a great night with the 20th, 21st, and 22nd degrees. March 29th will be the culmination of our Reunion. We will begin with the 23rd degree, Chief of the Tabernacle, at 7:45 am. The 23rd to 26th degrees are recent additions to our reunion schedule, each having been portrayed only a few times. They are the "religious" degrees of the Council of Kadosh and give insight into the early years of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. If you haven't seen them yet, you are always welcome to be a sideliner during a degree.
The end of the day will bring the 32nd degree, Master of the Royal Secret. This degree shares with our new brothers the Holy Doctrine and the Royal Secret. It also gives a brief synopsis of all 32 Scottish Rite degrees.
Following the 32nd degree, it will be time to celebrate. All Scottish Rite Masons, their ladies, and friends are invited to celebrate with our new class of candidates at the "Night in New York" Scottish Rite Gala. U of FM: Knights Templar and the Crusades
Pete Taggart, 32° KCCH and professor of history at Simpson College have a thought provoking presentation on the Crusades and the Knights Templar. Beginning with a background sketch on the historical environment that led to the Crusades (the four 'official' Crusades), Bro. Taggart then gave a brief account of events in the Crusades. Taggart's research into the founding of the Knights Templar turned conspiracy theories on their head, bringing historical context into the discussion.
With many of the knights on crusade being lower nobility, they had little to return to in Europe after conquering the land the French termed 'Outremer' (meaning 'overseas'). Thus, when the fighting against the Seljuk Turks ended, many knights found themselves begging in the streets of Jerusalem. After 19 years, eight knights had finally had enough of life as beggars, and approached the King Baldwin of Jerusalem, and thus formed the Poor Fellow Soldiery of the Temple, or the Knights Templar. Their founding was more out of pity, than out of conspiracy.
The Templars later gained favor of the Pope, and were made a holy order. Thus, donations to the Templars started pouring in, inadvertently leading to the decline of the crusades. One could much easier make donations to their local Templar preceptory instead of either going on crusade or donating to the Church to fund the crusades, the decline of crusades began.
After Saladin retook Outremer from the europeans, and the power and wealth of the Templars was at its height, the Templars became the target of jealousy. King Philip IV of France, being deeply in debt to the Templars, and jealous of their wealth, saw an opportunity to usurp it. On Friday 13, 1307, the Templars in France were arrested. Many confessed to heretical acts under torture, and suffered the consequences. The Templar Grand Master, Jacques deMolay, recanted his testimony of heresy in front of a crowd gathered in front of the fames Notre Dame cathedral in the middle of the River Seine in Paris, and was then burned at the stake.
Taggart's research put a new light on the story of the Templars, looking at history through the lens of what else was happening at the time, while bringing humor to the preposterousness of many conspiracy theories surrounding them.
A very enlightening presentation to the many assembled.

Scottish Rite Express
Knights Templar and the Crusades
By Pete Taggart, 32° KCCH
In 1736, a Scotsman living in France, named Chevalier Andrew Michael Ramsay, wrote a discourse or oration linking Freemasonry, the Crusades, and Orders of Knighthood. It has been said this oration led to the development of the "high" degrees involving the Knights Templar or Knights Kadosh in France. Whether this is entirely accurate from a historical standpoint, it is true that Freemasonry of today has grades of the Knighthood and feature the Crusades in many of our degrees. On Tuesday, March 4, Pete Taggart, 32° KCCH will take us back in time to learn about some of those famous knights from history that we see in our Scottish Rite Council of Kadosh degrees. He will also tell us more about the history of the Crusades and their impact on today.
This program is open to all including the ladies and non-Masons. It will take place in the Tapestry lounge and will begin with a social hour at 6:00 pm. The program will begin at 7:00 pm with dessert and coffee following. There is no cost to attend.

Memorial Class Reunion
We call our degree conferrals "Reunions" because the brethren come together to share the special lessons of the Scottish Rite degrees with a new class of candidates. As we meet to witness and perform these degrees, the teachings of the Scottish Rite are exemplified to our new brothers and reinforced in us anew.
Our first weekend will begin on Friday, March 14th. We will confer the 4th to 8th degrees. A pork loin dinner (baked potato, salad, rolls, and dessert) will be served at 5:00 pm. Cost is $10. We will open the Donald E. Lavender 33° Memorial Class Reunion at 6:00 pm. If you can attend the opening it is important that our new Scottish Rite Masons see familiar faces on their special night.
