Scottish Rite Express

Upcoming Events for Prospective Members to attend with you

Consistro Bistro (February 6th)
As with any good Italian restaurant the menu changes from time to time, it is a way to try new things and bring back old favorites. Your Master of Kadosh Mark Clark along with our Scottish Rite Kitchen Krew is preparing a true Italian dinner for you and your lady. But your evening is not limited to just good food; upon arriving you will be greeted by red and white checkered table cloths, Italian Bistro music, anti-pasto appetizers, and Chianti available. This is your chance to invite your lady to a Scottish Rite event where she is the guest of honor. Your non-Masonic friends and family are invited to attend. The dinner is $13, but we ask that you please make reservations by calling the Scottish Rite office at 515-288-8927 or rsvp@dmscottishrite.org by Monday, February 2, 2009.

This is the last of three fun events scheduled prior to the Spring Reunion for you to invite prospective Masons to attend. The Spring Reunion Kick-off is coming up on March 4, 2009. This event is designed to build enthusiasm for the upcoming Spring Reunion and as a chance to invite potential SR Masons to a fun event to meet other Scottish Rite members. It will feature a steak dinner. And a special program introducing the Scottish Rite as well as building tours. Cost is $10 for SR Masons. However, Masonic candidates are free. If you bring a candidate with a signed & paid petition, your dinner is free as well. Prospects for the Blue Lodge are also welcome. This event is for men only. The spring reunion is not far away, now is the perfect time to approach that Master Mason who has been considering joining but hasn’t for one reason or another. If you plan to attend please contact the office (515-288-8927 or sharshbarger@dmscottishrite.org.)

Meet Mark Clark, Master of Kadosh

Mark Clark was installed as Master of Kadosh of the Des Moines Consistory on December 10, 2008. Mark was born June 2, 1958. He attended the Des Moines schools and graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1976. He obtained a
Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Drake University – 1980

Mark was Raised to the Degree of a Master Mason in Capital Lodge #110 in the summer of 1976. He holds dual member with Moingona Lodge #633

Mark served as Senior Deacon of Capital Lodge in Mid-1980’s. Because of family and other commitments got in the way he had to drop out of the line. He figured he would go back and finish up when things eased up. (still the plan)

Mark joined the Des Moines Scottish Rite in November of 1976. He joined the Council of Kadosh Line and served in the following offices; 2nd Lt. Commander, 1999-2004; 1st Lt. Commander 2005-2008. He became Master of Kadosh for 2009. Mark received his KCCH – 10-16-1989 and his 33° -- 10/03/2001

(Interesting note, I think Bill Clark and Mark Clark are the first “two brothers” to both become Master of Kadosh, and Bill as a past Master of Kadosh, installed Mark Clark this December.)

Mark was a member of the Jerry Marsengill York Rite Class and remains a member of the Rite.

Marks plans for 2009 include continuing the great works and plans of his predecessors. He wants to enhance communication and information provided to members. He wants to find the interests and passions of members, and match them with opportunities within and without the Scottish Rite.

Mark says:

At the Scottish Rite, we attempt to blend together pieces of philosophy with ritual, demonstrated by plays and stories; fraternity and brotherhood through fellowship; and better relationships with food, drink, and social gatherings.

As no man is an island, we recognize that we will be better men, fathers, sons, brothers, and husbands, as we associate with others, living, learning, sharing and growing together.

University of Freemasonry

The 2009 DSM Scottish Rite Unversity of Freemasonary Series will hold another Degree Reading and Discussion on Wednesday January 21st, at 7:00 PM in the 3rd Floor Classroom.
We will be reading and reviewing the 6th Degree, Confidential Secretary.

In this degree one should expand their knowledge of duty, charity and toleration. We are instructed to reshape ourselves and our thinking into charity, self-control, and success i.e. to be a peacemaker. The apron of the 6th degree is white and red, with Hebrew letters YOD HEH in the center and a small triangle containing the Hebrew letters (clockwise from top) BETH, NUN, and SHIN. The gold triangle with the same three letters inscribed is the jewel that represents this degree.

This event is free of charge and open to all Scottish Rire members. This is a great opportunity to discuss the meanings, philosophy, and teachings of the degrees of the Scottish Rite. Please consider coming and contact your fellow Scottish Rite members about the event.

Thanks to all.

Next time you're at the Consistory, be sure to take a look at the library, yet keep in mind that it is still a work in progress!

Services set for Harry Cunningham 32°

Many of you may have already heard that Harry Cunningham 32° passed away on Thursday night after a long battle with cancer. Harry was very active in Scottish Rite and Waveland Park Lodge. Harry served as degree master for the 17th degree and was a ritualist in the 17th, 18th, and Maundy Thursday ceremonies. He joined the Scottish Rite in the Fall of 1999.

Harry was a member of the WDM Christian Church Choir for a brief time. In addition, Harry was elected to the WDMCC Board of Elders last summer, a position he was very proud of. Prior to that he had been a Deacon. He and his family were very active in the West Des Moines Christian Church. I know for a fact that Christian faith was very important to the Cunningham family and played an integral role for the family to work through the ups and downs of Harry's illness and treatments. To Harry's and Peggy's credit, the family has been "building memories" since the onset of Harry's cancer. Most recently, they spent extended time in Florida on vacation.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, January 8th, 2009 from 5 pm until 7 pm with the funeral service Friday morning, January 9th at 11:00 am;
all at the West Des Moines Christian Church located at 4501 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa.
