Maundy Thursday - Des Moines Scottish Rite

Des Moines Chapter Rose Croix

The Des Moines Scottish Rite held its annual Maundy Thursday Observance.

It was preceded by a delicious dinner in the Main Dining room prepared and served by the Kitchen Krew.

Delicious Swiss Steak on a bed of rice with carrots, salad and a roll. With Peach Cobbler ala mode for desert.  As always it was wonderful and the company was great.

In the Scottish Rite, darkness often refers to the disappearance of truth and justice in the world.  As the symbolic lights are extinguished, we reflect upon this loss,  By relighting then, we reinforce our belief that as Knights Rose Croix it is our duty to throw off the mantle of sorrow and darkness and emulate those historical figures who have brought truth and knowledge to mankind.  This solemn ceremonial is an imortant part of the ritualistic work of the Chapter Rose Croix and expresses our commitment to the living of a conscientious and enlightened life.

Herbert M. Smith 33 Class Reunion Recap

What an amazing couple of weekends!  The members of the Herbert M. Smith, 33 Memorial Class experienced some of the best work and hospitality of the Des Moines Scottish Rite.

After spending nearly two full weekends drinking from the fire hose that is the Scottish Rite work, participating in 27 of the 29 degrees of the Southern Jurisdiction, the members of the class escaped to the islands.

As snow fell outside, members of the class donned their Hawaiian shirts, and joined their ladies and guests in the Grand Banquet room that had been transformed into a tropical paradise, complete with live fish on the tables, and palm trees adorning the room.

Upon enjoying a meal that was straight from the islands (pineapple, mango, sweet potatoes  macadamia nut ice cream, and more) the program began with the usual Masonic introductions, and then the officers of the Herbert M. Smith, 33 Memorial Class shared their reactions to they had just experienced.  Class President Dylan W. Rasmussen, 32 having just served as the active candidate in the 32nd degree, shared his thoughts, then introduced class Secretary/Treasurer Lee Roy W. Porter, Jr, 32 who presented a gift on behalf of the class to the Valley to assist in the building improvement endeavors.  David E. Funk, 32 as the class Orator gave an excellent talk on his reactions to the work, and the applicability of its lesson in the world at large.

Then the music started, and nearly everyone present found themselves on the dance floor at some point in the evening, as music provided by Absolute Music DJ kept everyone enjoying the evening.

An absolutely perfect finish to a great reunion!  Welcome members of the Herbert M. Smith  33 Memorial Class to your Scottish Rite!

Scottish Rite Express

19 New Members join the Herb M. Smith Reunion!
Our 2013 Herb M. Smith, 33° Memorial Reunion began this past Friday, March 8th with the work of the Lodge of Perfection and Chapter Rose Croix.  The evening began with an outstanding pork loin dinner prepared by Dick Hudnall, 33° and his amazing "Kitchen Krew".

Following dinner was the opening of the reunion.  One of the highlights of the opening was Ron Husted, 32° and his bagpipes.  He piped in the Scottish Rite Officers and the members of the Advisory Conference escorted by the Knights of St. Andrew.  Class Marshal, Greg Van Vark, 32° KCCH then introduced us to the 19 members of the class.  Our opening consists of a new format and explanation of the Scottish Rite degrees prepared by our ritual directors, Brian Pappaducas, 33° and W. Charles Smithson, 32° KCCH.  If you haven't seen it, come check it out.  It is excellent.  The work began with the 4th Degree, Secret Master and concluded Friday evening with the 8th Degree, Intendant of the Building.

Saturday morning came quickly and the reunion started off a couple of minutes early with the 9th and 10th degree led by Degree Master, Craig L. Davis, 32° KCCH.  Saturday was a busy day as we performed the 9th through the 18th degrees.

Last fall we moved the location of the sound board to a new location in the balcony.  This March, we moved the lighting control board to this location as well.  Thanks to Mark Cook, 32°, Jeremy Phillips, 32° KCCH of the sound committee and Terry Hudik, 32° KCCH, Chairman of our lighting committee, for their effort in making this change.  The table and platform was built by John Clearman, 33°, Greg Spooner, 32° KCCH and  Bill Clark, 33°.

It takes hundreds of members to put on a reunion.  There were approximately 90 different Scottish Rite Masons doing ritual and over 25 members  in the Double Eagle Chorus  during the 1st weekend.  In addition to the committees already mentioned, it takes stage crew, wardrobe, tylers, dining room committee, and the mail crew to make a reunion happen.  Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 1st weekend reunion festivities.  It was a great start to our 2013 year.  See you on March 22nd for the 2nd weekend festivities.
Be sure to check out the invitation to the  Scottish Rite Trip to the Islands Party!
