Barrow's Reunion Kick-off
 
This Wednesday is the Reunion Kick-off and we are having BBQ Ribs!  The Spring Multi-State Reunion honoring SGIG Emeritus Harry S. Barrows is coming up on April 8th & 9th but before we can hold the reunion 
we need to have an event to introduce Masonry and Scottish Rite to prospective members.

This Wednesday, March 2nd is the night.  We will begin with social hour at 6:00 pm followed by dinner and a program.  The cost is $10 but candidates for Scottish Rite and the Masonic Lodge are free with a reservation. Reservations can be made by calling the SR Office 
(515-288-8927) or via email to rsvp@dmscottishrite.org.  If you are planning to attend, please contact us today.  Dress is business casual.

Spring Multi State Reunion to honor

The 2016 Spring Reunion in honor of SGIG Emeritus Harry S. Barrows, 33°will feature degree teams from all over the Midwest.  Throughout the weekend we will have performances from degree teams from: Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Omaha NE, Minneapolis MN, Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri. 
This special weekend will offer an opportunity to see different interpretations of our Scottish Rite degrees but it is also a chance to meet Scottish Rite Masons from other Valleys.  This reunion is designed to allow a candidate to become a Master of the Royal Secret in one weekend. 
The members of the Valley of Cedar Rapids will kick off the reunion with the 4th degree at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 8th.  The reunion will conclude on Saturday, April 9th with the 32nd degree and will be followed by a special Spring Gala in honor of Illustrious Brother Barrows.

We will have several special guests including our SGIG Gary L. Sissel and the Grand Master of Masons in Iowa, Arthur G. Crandon.
Our candidates for Scottish Rite will have the same experience as a regular reunion and receive the same meals, books, pins, 14th degree pyramid, and certificates as always.  Cost is $325 for candidates which also includes two tickets to the Spring Gala.
It is especially hoped that our Scottish Rite members will fill the side lines during the degrees to see how other Valleys portray the degrees and support them for traveling to our event.
Dress for the reunion is coat, tie, and AASR cap.   Your lady is invited to attend the reunion gala and  Spring Party.  Cost is $25 per person

  Announcing the passing of
       Brother Cecil H. Brewton, Jr., 32° KCCH
  


I regret to inform the members of the Des Moines Valley of the passing of Cecil H. Brewton, Jr., 90, on February 17, 2016 in Des Moines.

Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Corinthian Baptist Church, 814 School Street in Des Moines.

Cecil attended public schools in Iowa City, Mason City, and Des Moines and graduated from North High School in 1944. He then attended the University of Iowa in 1944, 46-48 at Drake University receiving a BSE and MSE degree. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, he worked with the youth and was an usher. Cecil played in the Greater Des Moines Band, The all Iowa Veterans Military Band, Vic Anderson's Big Band, and The Windjammers. He served in the US Army from 1944-1946 during World War II in the South Pacific.

He was an inactive member of Kappa Alpha Psi and was inducted into the North High Alumni Hall of Fame on September 16, 1993. On December 11, 1989 Cecil married Bobbretta M. Williams.

Cecil was employed as a laborer, life guard, pool manager, and supervisor of ice skating rinks from 1946-1971. He taught swimming for the Red Cross for 25 years. Cecil was employed by the Des Moines Independent Community School District from 1969-1988 and held the following positions home school worker, Dean of Students, Counselor, and Vice Principal. During that time he coached track, swimming, tennis, and football. Cecil retired from the District in 1988 and went to work at Grand View College as an adjunct in the Education Department, and taught African American Studies at East High School from 1995-1996.
Cecil became a Master Mason in Capital Lodge #110 in December of 2003, serving as Master twice.  He became a Master of the Royal Secret (32°) on April 17, 2004.  He was active as a Class Marshal and in the 22nd degree.  He was a member of the Knights of St. Andrew and had completed the Master Craftsman course.  Cecil was invested with the Knight Commander of the Court of Honour on November 19, 2009. 

Cecil leaves his loving wife, Bobbretta; and his six adult children, Cecil H. Brewton III of Des Moines, Charles G. Brewton of Lubbock, Texas, and Joyce R. Brewton/Taylor of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Frederick E. Brewton, William C. Brewton, Janine Kay Minter of Des Moines, Iowa, and Ayana Vigil Williams; and 12 grandchildren; and several other family members and friends.

Lodge of Perfection Degrees - This Thursday (February 18)
This Thursday, the Des Moines Valley, Lodge of Perfection, will be conferring the 4th Degree (Secret Master) and the 14th Degree (Perfect Elu).  This is a chance for any Master Mason to petition and start his journey through the Scottish Rite on a Thursday evening. 
These will be the full conferral of each of these two degrees with lights, sound, costumes, the Double Eagle Chorus, etc.  There will be a short education program between the 4th and 14th degrees.  If you do not have a candidate, come join us to watch these great degrees and support our new Scottish Rite members.
We will begin with candidate orientation at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6:00 pm, begin the degree work at 6:45 pm, and wrap up by 9:00 pm with dessert.  Minute steak with mushroom gravy, baked potato, Masonic green beans.  Cost is $10 for AASR members.
The cost to join Scottish Rite is $325 and a petition can be downloaded from the Des Moines Scottish Rite web site.

Annual Meeting of Des Moines Consistory
 
Reminder: The annual meeting of the Des Moines Consistory is tomorrow, Wednesday February 3, 2016.  There will be a chili supper at 6:15 pm with the annual meeting at 7:00 pm.  There is no cost for dinner.  Dress for the meeting is coat, tie and Scottish Rite cap (if you have one).
Come one, come all, to the 2016 Scottish Rite Reunions.

On behalf of the officers and members of the Des Moines Scottish Rite, we would like to invite you to our 2016 Scottish Rite reunions.  This year will feature a variety of reunion types for you to enjoy and for our candidates for the Scottish Rite. 
We will begin the year by offering two of the Lodge of Perfection degrees, the 4th degree, Secret Master and the 14th degree, Perfect Elu on the evening of February 18th.  These degrees are open to any Master Mason who wishes to begin his Scottish Rite experience by joining the Des Moines Lodge of Perfection on a Thursday evening.  We will begin with candidate orientation at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6:00 pm, begin the degree work at 6:45 pm, and wrap up by 9:00 pm with dessert.


On April 8th & 9th, we will host our first ever Multi-state Scottish Rite Reunion.  This reunion will honor Sovereign Grand Inspector General Emeritus, Harry S. Barrows, 33° and will feature degree teams from all over the Midwest.  Throughout the weekend we will have performances from degree teams from: Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sioux City, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri.  This special weekend will offer an opportunity to see different interpretations of our Scottish Rite degrees but it is also a chance to meet Scottish Rite Masons from other Valleys, and share our Scottish Rite lessons with a new class of candidates.  This reunion is designed to allow a candidate to become a Master of the Royal Secret in one weekend.  The members of the Valley of Cedar Rapids will kick off the reunion with the 4th degree at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 8th.  The reunion will conclude on Saturday, April 9th with the 32nd degree and will be followed by a special Spring Gala in honor of Illustrious Brother Barrows.


 
This Fall we will have a three Saturday reunion.  It will begin on October 15th (4th to 14th degrees), October 29th (15th to 22nd degrees) and complete on Saturday, November 12th (23rd to 32nd).  The 2016 Double Eagle Gala will be held following the 32nd degree on November 12th.
The cost to join the Scottish Rite is $325.00.  Candidates receive all of the reunion meals, the 14th degree pyramid, Bridge to Light book, Scottish Rite pin, Patent of Membership, Class picture, and two tickets to the Gala for the initiation fee.
