Scottish Rite Express

Consistro Bistro (Ladies Night)

Our Master of Kadosh Brian Pappaducas and his lady Michelle invite you to join us on February 1st at the Consistro Bistro. A taste of Italy is on the menu with anti-pasta, a selection of pastas featuring red and white sauces, salad, garlic bread, and dessert. Our M of K has visited a number of our area restaurants to select a menu we think you will enjoy.

Following dinner, there will be live music by Mark Christensen. Mark plays guitar and sings a variety of music from Jimmy Buffet to Tim McGraw.

This is your chance to invite your lady to a Scottish Rite event where she is the guest of honor. It will also provide a great opportunity for fellowship as well. Your non-Masonic friends and family are invited to attend.

The dinner is $10, but we ask that you please make reservations by calling the Scottish Rite office at 515-288-8927 or sharshbarger@dmscottishrite.org



Super Bowl Party – Feb 3rd

The teams are set…It is Giants/Patriots this year, so join us for some good cheer. The Scottish Rite and the Young Shriners invite you to attend our Super Bowl Party on Super Bowl Sunday February 3rd. The party will be held in the Sky Box (Pool Room area on 4th floor) at the Des Moines Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 519 Park Street. Come cheer on the team you like the best, watch the game, shoot some pool, and enjoy the good company. The game is 5:18 Des Moines time, and we will be open around 4pm. The YOSHI are supplying the chili, and ask that you bring a side dish or snacks to share with everyone. There will be libations available. Please join us and have a good time. If you could let us know if you are planning to attend it would be appreciated. An email or a call to the office is all it takes.



AASR WORK DAY – February 9th

There will be a work day at the Scottish Rite on Feb 9th from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. We will be working on a variety of “fix it” projects around the building. We need all types of skills; woodworking, plumbing, electrical, painting or just people like your secretary who doesn’t have any skills. The more the merrier. There will be coffee and donuts at 7:00 am with lunch at 12:00 pm. Join us if you can.

This past Saturday over 80 people braved the cold to join us for the annual breakfast in honor of the Officers of the various lodges. This event is sponsored by the Council of Kadosh, led by Mark Clark 33°, Commander. The cribbage tournament winners were:

Lodge Team – WestGate Adelphic #509

Individual – Tim Davis (1196 pts)

2 person team – Jim Nagel & Bob Kreamers (2360 pts)

Super Bowl Party


The Scottish Rite would like to invite you to attend our Super Bowl Party Hosted by the YOSHI (Young Shriner’s Club) on Super Bowl Sunday February 3rd.

The party will be held in the Sky Box (or Pool Room) at the Des Moines Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 519 Park Street.

Come cheer on the team you like the best, watch the game, shoot some pool, and enjoy the good company.

The game is 5:18 Des Moines time, and we will be open around 4pm.

The YOSHI are supplying the chili, and ask that you bring a side dish or snacks to share with everyone, but bring your own beverages (BYOB).

We will have a few extra coolers around but you may want to bring you own to be safe and we will have some extra ice if needed.

8th Annual Lodge Breakfast/ Cribbage Tournament/Annual Spring Reunion Kick-off

All Masons are invited to the 8th annual Lodge Breakfast hosted by the DSM Scottish Rite, Council of Kadosh.   January 19, 2008 8:00 AM

The purpose of the breakfast is to recognize all Blue Lodge Officers and give them a chance to exchange ideas and calendars. The directory of area Masters and Wardens will be distributed. A Masonic education program will follow.

Annual Spring Reunion Kick-off
The Spring Reunion Kick-off is coming up on February 28, 2008. This event is designed to build enthusiasm for the upcoming Spring Reunion and as a chance to invite potential SR Masons to a fun event to meet other Scottish Rite Members. It will feature a steak dinner. There will be a special program introducing the Scottish Rite as well as building tours. Cost is $10 for SR Masons. However, SR candidates are free. If you bring a candidate with a signed & paid petition, your dinner is free as well. This event is for men only.

Remember the reunion this Spring is in honor of Pete Pascal, PGM 33°.

Spring Reunion named for "Pete" Paschal



Harold D. (Pete) Paschal was born on September 27, 1916 in Colfax, Iowa. At the age of 13 he and his family moved to Newton where he graduated from Newton High School in 1934. He attended the University of Iowa. In 1938 he began his employment with the Maytag Company which continued until his retirement in 1982 as Manager of General Accounting after 43 _ years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Pete was involved in a variety of community activities: life member of VFW Post #1655, Newton American Legion Post #111, Maytag Management Club, past president of the Newton Noon Kiwanis and Newton Chamber of Commerce. He was long and active member of the Newton First United Methodist Church.

Pete was a gifted musician and music was a big part of his life. He was secretary/treasurer of the Newton Municipal Band from 1928-2001, member of the Iowa Veterans Band, Scottish Rite Band, and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Band. His favorite instruments were the trumpet and bass drum.

Bro. Paschal was raised in Newton Lodge #59 on November 12, 1948. He served as Worshipful Master in 1955. In 1960 he was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Custodians and served in that capacity for 45 years.

Companion and Sir Knight Paschal was a member of the Newton York Rite Bodies and had served as High Priest, Illustrious Master, and Eminent Commander. He was a recipient of the Knight of York Court of Honour (KYCH). In 1998 he was the recipient of the Cryptic Mason of the Year award. He was a member and past Sovereign of St. Ignatius Conclave Red Cross of Constantine.

Bro. Paschal was a member and past patron of Newton Chapter #100 Order of the Eastern Star. He had served the Grand Chapter of Iowa as Grand Trustee.

He was a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and charter member of the Jasper County Shrine Club. He was a recipient of the DeMolay Legion of Honor.

In the Grand Lodge of Iowa, Bro. Paschal served as Grand Treasurer, Deputy Grand Master, and Grand Master of Masons in Iowa for the year of 1985-1986. He had served as Trustee of the Rowley Masonic Home and was trustee emeritus of the Grand Charity Fund.

Bro. Paschal received the Scottish Rite degrees in 1975. He was invested with the Knight Commander Court of Honour in 1987 and was coroneted a 33° IGH in 1997.
