                Brother James A. Spoerl, 33° 
  

Brethren,
We are saddened to report the passing of James A. Spoerl, 33°.  Visitation will be on Monday, August 22nd from 4 to 7 pm with a Masonic Service to begin at 7pm.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at 10:30 am, all at the Merle Hay Funeral Home Chapel at 4400 Merle Hay Rd in Des Moines.

James A. Spoerl, 75, known as Jim to family and friends, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Unity Point Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following complications from heart surgery.  

Jim was born in Marion, North Dakota to Arthur and Mildred Spoerl.  He started his career in the radio industry as a radio DJ in Pipestone, MN.  Jim came to Des Moines when he took a job in sales with the KSO & KIOA stations.  Later Jim joined the Lessing Flynn Advertising Firm and remained with them until his retirement earlier this year.

Masonically, Jim joined Warren Lodge #53 in 1970.  He transferred his membership to Waveland Park Lodge #654 in 1983 and served as Master in 1999.  He became a Master of the Royal Secret on April 17, 1971, he received his Knight Commander Court of Honour on October 21, 1985 and he was coronated with his 33rd Degree on October 3, 2001.  Jim was very active in ritual, particularly in the 17°, 18°, 21° and 32°.  He was currently serving as Degree Master of the 17th degree and the 32nd Degree as well as Prior.  He was also a Director on the Iowa Scottish Rite Masonic Foundation.  Jim served in the Rose Croix line and was Master of Kadosh in 2001.  He also served as Director of the Work for many years.  He was also a and a member of Za Ga Zig Shrine.

He took pride in his accomplishment in helping bring a Ronald McDonald House to Des Moines.  Jim was an avid golfer, loved spending time with family and doted on his beloved dog, Skyla.
