Scottish Rite Express

It is with regret we announce the passing of H.A. "Al"Dunlap.  He passed away peacefully July 26, 2014 at the Scottish Rite Park Care Center in Des Moines.

Al was born on August 29, 1924 in Hardy, Arkansas to William and Eva Dunlap. After graduating from high school Al moved to Bartlesville, OK and worked for Phillips Petroleum where he met his future wife Joanne. Al and Joanne were married July 1, 1948.

After several work-related moves they settled in Urbandale, Iowa where they made their home and raised their two children. In 2010 they moved to Scottish Rite Park. Al was a proud employee of Phillips Petroleum Co. for 50 years.  Al was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Capital Lodge #110 AF & AM, Des Moines Consistory, Des MoinesYork Rite Bodies, Za Ga Zig Shrine, High Twelve Club, Shrine Past Masters Club

Al was very active in Scottish Rite and was a 50 year member receiving the 32nd Degree in 1963.  He chaired the mail crew for many years.  Al performed as Adolph the Saxon in the 21st degree as well as doing parts in the 20th, 30th, 31st and 32nd degrees.  Al was director of the ritual for the Council of Kadosh.  He served as Commander of the Council of Kadosh1985-1987 and was Master of Kadosh in 1988.  Al was invested a Knight Commander Court of Honour in 1981 and with the 33rd and last degree in 1989.  He was a Past Master of Capital Lodge #110 and received his District Lecturer Certificate in 1961.

Al is survived by his daughter Diane (Al Hohrmann) Dunlap of Des Moines; son Bruce (Ann) Dunlap of Iowa City; and grandchildren Ian Dunlap and Ellen Dunlap. Al was preceded in death by his wife Joanne; his parents; his seven siblings; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, July 31 at 1:30 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale. Visitation will be at Iles Westover Chapel from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 with his Masonic service performed at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Private interment will take place at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.
